This page is created to assist breeders in determining if the lines they are currently using in their breeding programs carry
for the Dilute (Blue) Gene.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR CAT CARRIES THIS GENE?
There are currently two ways to know 100% that your cat carries for dilute.
1. Send in a DNA sample to UC Davis, or any other company currently doing dna testing on felines. (SEE MY INFO ON HOW
TO SEND IN DNA SAMPLES TO UC DAVIS BELOW)
2. The second way to know. If your brown bengal is bred to another brown bengal and a blue kitten is produced, then BOTH
parents carry this gene. A blue dilute kitten can NOT be produced if only one parent carries this gene.
WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE A BROWN TO BROWN BREEDING?
It really does not need to be brown to brown since a blue can be produced from the breeding of any two bengals that carry
one copy of this gene BUT it is very difficult to tell if you have a silver blue, sepia blue, mink blue or lynx blue. So,
to prevent a silver kitten being mistaken for a blue it is safer to assume the kitten is blue ONLY IF both parents are brown
unless DNA testing has confirmed it. Also, since some frosted kittens can appear blue, never assume you have a blue kitten
if it is not at least 12wks old and still blue.
